Train to be a Teacher

Make the most of your degree by taking the highly successful ‘School Direct’ route towards qualified teacher status.  Our one year ‘School Direct’ teacher training programme is delivered in Telford, Shropshire. The feature of our programme is that it mostly based in school and as a consequence means that our trainees are highly employable by the end of the year. Take a look at our testimonial videos below.

100% of the associate teachers who completed the course in 2018 did so rated good or outstanding, and 90% secured employment in Telford prior to completion of the course.

We provide two routes into teaching. One is a Primary School programme (5 to 11 year olds) and the other is an Early Years programme (3 to 7 year olds)

You must have at least a 2:2 degree to apply, and hold GCSE (or equivalent) English, maths and science at A-C.  There is also a government requirement that all trainee teachers must pass the English and Maths Key Skills tests prior to embarking on a training programme – further details can be found here.

The University of Chester provides the academic aspects of our programme and will award you the internationally recognised Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) on successful completion of the course.

Dependent on the classification of your degree there may be financial grants to support you through the one year programme. A number of trainee teachers receive further grants and loans which can be investigated through the ‘Student Finance ‘website.

Trainees are entitled to a student loan to cover tuition fees, which doesn’t have to be repaid until you are earning a salary. This is arranged by each individual.

On successful completion of one of our programmes you will be a fully qualified teacher, with starting salaries in schools of around £24,000.  Last year 90% of our cohort of trainee teachers secured teaching jobs before the end of the course.

Teaching within our Alliance means that you will have the opportunity to work in a Telford school or Early Years setting, working alongside outstanding practitioners. Telford schools are recognised for their high quality provision and professionalism, most schools are graded outstanding or good by Ofsted. Beyond your training year remaining within the Severn Alliance will ensure that you have access to an individualised leadership development programme throughout your career in Telford.

If you are interested in receiving excellent training to be a teacher on our programme, visit the UCAS site and select the Severn Teaching School.
