Train to be a Teacher

Make the most of your degree by taking the highly successful ‘School Direct’ route towards qualified teacher status.  Our one year ‘School Direct’ teacher training programme is delivered in Telford. The feature of our programme is that it mostly based in school and as a consequence means that our trainees are highly employable by the end of the year. Take a look at our testimonial videos below.

We provide three routes into teaching:

  • Primary (5 to 11 year olds)
  • Early Years (3 to 7 year olds)

Graduates must have at least a 2:2 degree to apply.  If you are yet to gain a degree various levels of funding are available to support part time study, in the same way that full time students get support – you need to investigate this with providers, but a degree may be more accessible than you think!

The University of Chester provides the academic aspects of our programme and as well as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) will award you the internationally recognised Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) on successful completion of the course.

There may be bursaries & grants available to help support you through the one year programme. A number of trainee teachers receive further grants and loans accessed through the ‘Student Finance‘ website.

A student loan is available for all participants to cover tuition fees, this doesn’t have to be repaid until you are earning a salary.

On completion of one of our programmes you will be a fully qualified teacher, with starting salaries in schools of around £24,000.  We have a high percentage of trainee teachers who secure jobs before the end of the course each year, and an increasing number of our graduates remain in Telford progressing to middle and senior leader roles.

Teaching within our Alliance means that you will have the opportunity to work in a Telford school or Early Years setting, working alongside outstanding practitioners. Telford primary/EY schools are recognised for their high quality provision and professionalism, most primary/EY schools are graded outstanding or good by Ofsted.

Are you interested in a Special School placement? The Severn Teaching School is able to offer a limited number of training placements in Special Schools. If you are interested in finding out more about experiencing an extensive placement in a Special School you are encouraged to show an expression of interest either during your initial conversations with us, or at your face to face interview day.

Our courses have one annual intake each September.  Applications and expressions of interest are accepted throughout the year, and information sessions take place frequently.  For further details please visit our website or contact us directly.
